Thursday, March 31st

Today we watched a video about Joseph Stalin. This video was very informative and showed us that the events that happened on Animal Farm very closely mirrored the Soviet Union. Please pick up a video worksheet if you were absent and get the answers from a classmate. You will need this information tomorrow in class!

Please also bring scissors and glue/tape tomorrow for class!

Thanks!

Tuesday, March 15th

Today in class I passed out your Animal Farm novels. Make sure your name is written on these! These are a hot item, and you are going to want to have them with you in class at all times!

We read chapter 1 in Animal Farm as a class, and then read chapters 2 & 3 on our own. You need to fill out the chapter 1 - 3 study guide (which you can find in the absent folder next to the door). There are quite a few characters in this book, keep track of them however you need to. Study guide & reading is due tomorrow.

We checked Chapter 1 - 3 vocab today as well. Please see me if you have any questions. I did not take this for a grade, but these words will be on your quizzes.

Monday, March 14th

Today in class we discussed advertisements, persuasion techniques and propaganda. You need to get the notes over the rhetorical triangle (click there to check out the powerpoint we used in our discussion) from someone in class. We also worked on a vocabulary worksheet for Animal Farm chapters 1-3. You need to add a few things to this worksheet: 1) You may not use a dictionary on questions 1-8 on the front. 2) You need to tell me the part of speech for each word 1-8 on the back matching section. 3) You need to add a part three. For part three, you need to write one sentence for each vocabulary word that includes context clues. Show me that you know what the word means!

We will be starting Animal Farm in class tomorrow. For two points bonus - be the first person to tell me the author of Animal Farm.

Friday, March 11th

Today in class we discussed synthesizing information. Here are a few notes about our discussion:

Key Questions:
What does it mean to synthesize information?
     - When you gather information and come to your own conclusions
Where can you use this skill in your daily life?]
     - Rumors, Food choices, News shows
How can you synthesize the information on the survey to create a character and a story?
-Use the answers to come up with different events in a story and details about a character

Assignment:
After you are given a survey that is not your own, you will read over the answers your partner wrote down. Think about them. What sticks out as interesting and unique? Now comes the fun part. You get to be creative! You will use the character you created and write a short story based on that character.

Ok, so… what does a short story have? Does anyone remember the rap song?(remind me to play link!)
-        Plot
-        Character
-        Conflict
-        Theme
-        Setting

*Practice your best "gangsta lean" as you watch this video about short stories!

Your story must have all of these! Now, the question you have all been dying to ask…
How long does it have to be? At least three (3) solid paragraphs.

Your story must also start with, "Once upon a time...."

Be creative! These stories are due Monday, and we will be sharing them in class.
